A lot of learning has been going on in room 5. Music instruction from our UOP student teachers has been a huge hit. We dove deep into California history with our classroom's California PBL. We had an opportunity to go to Kennedy Mines and experience how many people mined back in the mid 1800's. Overall we had a great month full of learning opportunities. The last couple weeks of school were jammed packed with fun activities. We had Spirit Days, which our middle school leadership class and our wonderful school counselor organized. Unity Day was a highlight of the week, students had a wonderful assembly that had students thinking about inclusion and the power of being kind to all. Our school's annual STEM Fest was a huge success. My school families and the community came out to support our event. It was a lot of fun and it was wonderful seeing my students at an after school event. Besides all the great events students were also busy learning and exploring new concepts. We had a couple students who achieved 100% on Reflex math. Overall a great couple of weeks of fun, learning, and creativity from my students. Room 5 students have been very busy in class. We just concluded our first PBL of the year, the Changing Earth PBL. Students learned about how our Earth is constantly changing and how humans and animals are impacted because of it. Students designed a building using the design and engineering process to see if their building can sustain an "earthquake; " it was a fun design challenge. Next time your are on campus, check out the interactive bulletin board in the hallway next to our class to see your students presentations. Exciting things are happening in our classroom. We have 2 new music instructors from UOP who are coming to our classroom to give students music instructions twice a week. The class started a new novel, By The Great Horn Spoon, ask your student how they are enjoying the book. Great things are happening in room 5. We started our new PBL, The Changing Earth and students are having a great time learning about how our Earth changes overtime. I introduced The Walking Classroom this week. Students are enjoying learning by hearing some great informational podcasts. We had a great presentation from one my students; who decided he wanted to do research and present about Global Warming; it was so awesome! Students had a lot of amazing time learning and asking some great questions from the presentation. I saw many students start to brainstorm about what they would like to research and present to the class. We also had great success with students collaborating and explaining their mathematical reasoning with the class.
Things are buzzing in room 5! It has been an exciting two weeks of school. We hit the ground running and haven't stopped. The first weeks of school are always exciting because of the energy students bring. They are eager to reunite with friends and make new ones. This year our school has a new safety officer, Mr. Panos. He came into our classroom and introduced himself. I can tell students are really going to enjoy having him on our campus. He is passionate about student safety and makes the students feel at ease with his humor and calm demeanor. Our classroom is fortunate to have Ms. Meraz, a teacher resident and will be in our class all year long. She has quickly bonded with the students and is a great fit to our classroom and campus. These two weeks have been packed with getting to know each other and learning our routines, and expectations in the classroom. I am eager to see what this school years brings. Last night we celebrated our school wide Flight P.B.L., showcasing our students hard work. The culmination project of our class flight P.B.L was a huge success, thanks to the hard work and dedication from my students. P.B.L's are my students favorite learning opportunities, because it incorporates the 4 C's in education: Collaboration, Communication, Critical Thinking and Creativity! I am always in awe of the projects that result from their learning. February was a short month, but packed with a lot of learning. Students learned about Chinese New Year, from Mrs. Chan. We celebrated Engineers Week, started reading our new novel A Long Walk to Water, 4th grade students helped our kinder friends with their animal P.B.L and we concluded our P.B.L with presentations and dissecting owl pellets. January was a very eventful month; we started a new PBL that had my students going to the Monterey Bay aquarium. Students read the Who Was books and wrote an essay on their subject. Many students accomplished 100% on Reflex math. We celebrated the 100th day of school with students taking pictures to see how the "aged", pretty hilarious! |
