Our field trip to the Kennedy Mines in Jackson, Ca. was awesome! Students were immersed in Gold Rush history. The docents that are all volunteers, engaged my students in learning how a gold mine worked and the rich history of the Kennedy Mine. I highly recommend a visit to the mine if you are near by. October was a long month, full of learning and fun. Students had a blast at STEM Fest and it was wonderful to see all our school community come out and support us. This month we delve into our California PBL, started module 3 in math, continued working on writing with spooky stories. Students were so creative in writing and recording their stories. We had a dairy cow visit us, had fun with figurative language and my students led the school in the flag salute, and morning message. It was a busy and productive month!! We finished our study of the Changing Earth with a bang! Students learned so much about how our Earth is formed and how mother nature has a huge impact on our earth, and lives. Our final project was researching natural disasters that have impacted the Earth and human life. Students also have been busy learning our new writing program Step Up to Writing, below you will see students focusing on brainstorming, writing, editing and publishing their opinion papers. We have started our new P.B.L about California; I can't wait to see how much students learn about our state while delving into history and science. We also have the opportunity to have music from UOP grad students. Miss. O. will be coming to our class twice a week to give music instruction to our students; how lucky we are!!! We had a very exciting week in 4th grade. Students are digging deep into our Changing Earth P.B.L. they are learning so much about how landforms and natural disasters change our Earth. We had an opportunity to experiment on how engineers design structures to resist earthquakes. Students had a blast designing, building and testing their structure using toothpicks, marshmallows and jello. Special thanks to all the families who donated items for our experiment. Students were also timed for the mile run. This was their preliminary time and will serve as a benchmark for decreasing their time as the year progresses. Stay tune for more fun and learning we will have with this P.B.L. This was our official first full week of school and it was a great one. We are establishing our routines and getting to know one another. All of the students have been really flexible with our new campus, even though it feels that our halls act as a maze to get from one place to another. We are slowly getting to find our way around and having fun while doing so. I'm excited by all the curiosity for learning that this years class has been showing me. I can't wait to dig deeper into our content and be blown away by their progress. Below are a few pictures of students during P.E. On Friday we had an Epic ultimate animal dodge ball against Mr. Compise's class. It was a great way to end our week. Our heart lab was a success and hit with my students! Thanks to the UEI vocational college for their volunteers and our classroom volunteers that made this event possible. Our students are 'experts' in cardiovascular health. My students have been busy working on our Adaptations P.B.L. We had a great time dissecting owl pellets, creating a new species and learning about the 6 biomes. I am extremely proud of their hard work even though we were deep in state testing. Room 402 have been busy working on plant adaptations and animal adaptations PBL. As part of the opening event for the PBL we went to Oak Grove Nature Center. Students had a blast learning about the oak trees, the native people and animals that once resided or still reside in our area.
